...and it looks like it's going to be clear around here!
Greetings Members and Friends of the SSAStros,
It's well known that many members of our fine group have been planning for and are going to attempt to experience this eclipse from the path of totality, but we also have many folks who don't plan to travel for it. For those staying local, fret not, for this eclipse will still offer a very special viewing experience, and right from your own backyard!
From our local area, the Moon will cover up to nearly 92% of the Sun at maximum eclipse. That's HUGE! That means that the Sun will take on the appearance - through safe filtering of course - of what those young crescent Moons look like each month in the early evening skies.
To get an idea of exactly how much Sun will be covered by the Moon from your exact location, try this awesome Eclipse Simulator tool share with me by club member Steve Reilly;

Here's a tip for using that tool: Ignore the box that says "enter city" and just expand the map and find your location, then tap it. Once you've done that it will ask you to rotate your device to "landscape" orientation, then just use the sliders to scroll through the various phases of the event. I'm sure after seeing how much of the Sun will be covered from around here, you'll absolutely want to see it for yourself on Monday afternoon!
So whatever you do, try to make it a point to step outside at least once on Monday afternoon around 3:30pm local time, and with some form of eye protection - eclipse glasses, welders shades, welders helmets, some sort of projection device, a properly filtered telescope...anything but the naked eye - and marvel at the spectacle of the Moon having moved in front of the Sun from our perspective. It's not something that we get to see very often!
Best of luck to everyone with their eclipse experiences!
Sincerely,
Mike McCabe
