Greetings Fellow Enthusiasts of Things in the Sky,
Unless you've been living under a rock you're probably aware that long-time club member Steve LaFlamme has issued a standing invitation for members to visit his observatory some morning this summer for some thrilling solar exploration. There is nothing second-rate about Steve's operation, and the views of ol' Sol through his top-of-the-line equipment are indeed - ahem - STELLAR!
Steve and I spent some time in and around his observatory basking in the rays this morning and experimenting with some equipment combinations, and as though for our entertainment exclusively, the Sun was putting on a show. You just never know what the Sun is going to be doing from one minute to the next, never mind one day to the next!
In particular today there was a prominence that appeared to be levitating above the limb of the Sun, and we watched as it and the surface below evolved in virtually real time.
After a couple of hours it was time for me to go, and so I left Steve to do what he does best - wrangle photons from objects in space! Steve plugged his camera into his telescope and captured an image of the features that enthralled us for most of the morning.
You may have enjoyed at some point a Wolf Full Moon in January, some of you may become afraid if you see a Wolf Spider, the movie Dances with Wolves put Kevin Costner on the map long before Yellowstone, and now you have the Jumping Wolf on the Sun. You'd be jumping too if spicules hotter than 10,000°f were licking at your butt.
Don't say we never tried to entertain you.
Mike M.
