Greetings Friends and Members of the SSAStros,
Louis and I have been chatting and thinking that we'd like to conduct a little observing expedition to see the current comet du jour, 12/P Pons-Brooks before it goes south. This is the same one that I saw last week from a parking lot at U-Mass Dartmouth. We're thinking that the Granite Links golf club might make a good venue for this junket.
By the looks of the forecast we're probably a week out or more before we can make this happen, but in the meantime I wanted to share some maps of the comet's travels across the sky. It will essentially travel low and horizontally across the western sky over the course of the next month, which means that it will only be visible to us from the onset of darkness until about an hour after that each night.
The comet is also being touted in some circles as becoming visible in the daytime sky during the upcoming eclipse, but as it always is with our icy visitors from the depths, we'll see.
PDF of comet path maps attached.
Sincerely,
Mike McCabe
