Greetings Friends and Members of the South Shore Astronomical Society,
If you couldn't make last night's meeting you missed a doozy! First of all we had a presentation from guest speaker Diana Hannikainen, a radio astronomy astrophysicist and observing editor for Sky and Telescope. Her presentation spoke to the origins and evolution of radio astronomy, and was very well received by all present. Thanks to Jim Ahola for recruiting Diana to speak. It was quite the breath of fresh air!
As for our month of October, we were once again very active as a group. We got out and shared the cosmos with the public on no less than 5 occasions, and all told members got together on some level at least 8 times over the course of the month.
As you can see in the calendar below, we had two events cancelled by weather. The Abington Public Library event has been rescheduled to tomorrow night, Friday, November 4th and it's looking like the sky will cooperate this time. Astronomer setup will begin anytime after 6pm, with guests scheduled to arrive around 7pm. We hope to see everyone there!
For this month we have a total of three scheduled outreach events. Abington, which I just spoke of, then Pine Hills on the 12th and tentatively Hingham Middle School on the 30th. Then on the 8th there is the Full Moon Rising event at Lawson Tower and on the subsequent Fridays we'll occupy the sidewalk at the Scituate Lighthouse if it's nice out. Beyond that, if we've got any energy left, we might consider observing at Centennial Field and tuning in to the Cosmic Coffeehouse. Use the calendar below to remind yourself of the dates (the blue asterisks indicate requested outreach events where we need multiple scopes on the ground).
And if that's not enough astronomy for you, don't forget that we have a total lunar eclipse coming up on the morning of the 8th, and my famous Club Observing Objectives that you might want tackle in between events (or even use to help choose targets at the outreaches). Both documents are attached to this email so you can print them if that strikes your fancy. The attached eclipse document is printer-friendly with a white background, and the observing objectives doc contains an additional page, a crib sheet if you will with some additional details about many of the objects.
Keep Looking Up!
Mike McCabe
